Today’s post is a quick note on intergenerational trauma; a term that is getting very popular nowadays in the field of psychology. But what exactly does it mean?
When emotions of traumatic events stay unprocessed for a long time in our system, they stay locked in our bodies and get imprinted in our genes. To “survive”, we develop different defense mechanisms and surviving patterns. The intensity of these patterns depends on the degree of the trauma we endured. The way we view the world shifts and from objective, is now perceived through a pair of filtered lenses.

The spring is coming, the weather is opening up, however, most of us are still going through the covid lockdown restrictions according to the different local or national regulations. And it doesn’t matter if these restrictions are softer or harder, what matters is that they have a common denominator and that’s the “covid burnout”.
I’m coming every day in contact with people who feel like they have reached their limits and they cannot deal anymore with all the changes that this covid-era has brought.

Understanding your emotions well enough can help you take measurable plus actionable steps in order to connect with others and in turn protect your own mental health. Over the last few months, several people have been confined to their homes in order to curb and disorient the spread of the virus in the COVID’19 crisis! Please understand that while some people are living with family, friends or even roommates, others might even be living alone. There are many of us who even might be missing our friends, family members and relatives and at times, we might even find ourselves feeling lonely, isolated, or more so bored.

As some of you may already know, I recently became a new mom and after taking some time off to rest, take care of the little one and adjust to the new reality, I had the opportunity to reflect upon parenting so that’s what I will be sharing with you in this blog.
Parenting is the process of assisting a child’s physical, emotional, cognitive and social development from infancy to adulthood. It might seem simple; however, parenting is a very complex process that doesn’t come with a manual! Nowadays, new parents/caregivers have more access to available sources and can learn a lot on how to more efficiently parent their kids in comparison to previous generations. However, no matter how much information and sources one can accumulate, when it comes down to the core of parenting, everyone is on their own.

Some of these people are aware of the negative effects this kind of parenting had in their lives, so they come to therapy in order to learn new ways and break free from all the limiting patterns they learned in the past.

Many people find themselves not only worrying for their physical health, but also struggling with lots of anxiety, depression and hopelessness.

The Giver, the Carer and the Fixer: the codependent’s story

When we are kids, we are dependent on our parents to take care of both our physical and our emotional needs. In order to “learn how to fly”, we need their validation when we go through a wide range of emotions and their supportive love to help us process and regulate them. We need them to see us, hear us and acknowledge us for who we truly are in order for us to learn how to trust ourselves and have a good sense of our own self-worth. And it is through this mirroring that we are then able to develop a healthy relationship and a healthy dialogue with our own inner self.

Trauma-drama addiction takes place daily in our lives and it takes many shapes and forms, some of which are gossiping, complaining about people and situations, getting involved in fights (emotional-physical), holding grudges, betraying, being betrayed or setting up any relationships like that so as to play either the victim or the perpetrator. And when that’s not enough dramatic, you only need to open your tv or your social media to come across the global trauma-drama chaos…wars, disasters, global warming, murders, abuse, rapes and the list goes on and oooon.

While Christmas is one of the most exciting and favorite times of the year for some people, for some others is a very stressful period that brings up a variety of emotions such as depression, grief, anxiety, frustration, anger and disappointment. Family gatherings and meetings with old or unwanted acquaintances can be chaotic and can trigger you BIG TIME. In case you are dealing with a difficult situation like a break up, a sickness, the loss of a loved one or if living alone or far from home, things can get even more intense and throw you off balance.

Nowadays, the world is power driven. People want to have power over other people and this power takes the form of different types of control; control in family relationships, romantic relationships, friendships, control in working and social environments and ultimately control in bigger scales like religious driven control or control exercised by a state or other various governmental systems.
